About the Artist

Artist Biography
Growing up in the Midwest, Susie enjoyed exploring Lake Michigan beaches, ravines, and the winding park paths near her home. The trees changing across the seasons and the lake shifting from crashing waves to icy motion were visions that inspired her to create art. Living near Chicago gave her the opportunity to frequently visit the Art Institute of Chicago, to view and appreciate the tremendous diversity in art. She also lived near Ravinia Park, an outdoor music venue that featured everything from rock-and-roll to the symphony to the ballet. Evolving from a childhood immersed in the arts, it became her life-long passion to translate the feelings and impressions of special moments into something permanent and tangible.
Susie’s art training started in earnest in high school. She experimented with a variety of mediums. While primarily a visual artist, her passion for artistic expression included dance, creating shapes and interpreting emotions and music through movement. Susie went on to study dance and fashion design at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. Throughout the years, she’s continued her art studies through workshops and local art programs, eventually focusing on oils and watercolors.
After a road trip through Wyoming and Colorado in the 1970’s, Susie fell in love with the Rockies and dreamed of living among the ever-changing beauty of the mountain landscape. In 2014, Colorado became her permanent home and she began to paint full-time.
Susie’s inspiration comes from sweeping landscapes but also from the small “gems” hidden within the broader views. She discovers interesting and unusual sights while out in nature, capturing the visual drama of shadows, light, and unusual shapes on canvas. Her paintings often bring into focus those finer views that may be overlooked.

ARTIST STATEMENT
Being a naturally curious person, I’m always looking closely at my surroundings. Driving past a rock formation, I wonder how the striations were formed over the millennia. Or a tree casting shadows; how the shadow is distorted by the objects it passes over or how the color changes across the snow. Or the incredible cloud formations over the mountains. There is always a new way to experience life and I never stop looking.
My paintings are designed to be contemplative, revealing the unexpected and highlighting hidden “gems” discovered within the broader landscape. This is achieved by being generous with the use of rich colors, lines, and textures, and often showing views from an unconventional perspective. The goal of my artwork is to pull beauty out of the simplest of objects or sites, sharing the essence of these experiences through the paintings.
